Generally, martensite in iron alloys that do not contain carbon is soft and highly ductile, but on the other hand, it has low strength, and since there is almost no carbon present even after tempering, carbide precipitation hardening is not achievable.
Instead of carbides, fine precipitate particles of intermetallic compounds are dispersed to enhance strength, as seen in precipitation-hardened stainless steels such as SUS630 and SUS631, as well as ultra-high-strength maraging steels.
Among silicoalloy steels, "Silicoalloy A2" and "Silicoalloy XVI" utilize the precipitation hardening mechanism, particularly characterized by the refined matrix structure of "Silicoalloy XVI," which has hard intermetallic compounds precipitating.
